30 Day Book Challenge: Day Twenty-two

Book you plan to read next: One Hundred Years of Solitude – Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Not really much I can say about a book I haven’t read (although, an honors degree in English can really help at times…). I actually read a chunk of this a few years ago, but I was too busy with school and had to put it down. Still, the 50 pages or so that I did read were brilliant. The only thing else I’ve read by Marquez is the short story “A Very Old man with Enormous Wings,” which is also brilliant. (I highly recommend it especially if you’re a fan of “The Simpsons.”)

I’ve always been hesitant to read Marquez I think because his work is translated. While the translation I’ve read was beautiful, I keep thinking to myself, “what is it like in the original Spanish? what poetry is being lost in translation?” I guess in a perfect world I could just pick up Spanish, but unfortunately I don’t live in continental Europe. Oh well.

  1. This was the book I was planning on writing about for my 22nd day! I would like to know what you think of it. I’ll also give that short story a go 🙂
